The geologically younger and smaller Pacaya Volcano, is a complex stratovolcano located within the rim of the Amatitlan caldera lake. Its continuos activity in past years has made it one of the most notorious Volcanoes amongst climbers in Guatemala. Our complete tour of Pacaya National Park starts at the parks headquarters climbing into the humid forests on the volcanoes fertile slopes.

Reaching la Meseta a sandy shelf resembling a lunar landscape, we get a full view of Pacaya´s smoking cone, and the progression of its thousand year old lava flows. Reaching the base of the cinder cone, a last push up volcanic scree takes us to the craters rim allowing for a unique look into Pacaya´s red smoking belly.

Leaving Antigua early, we try to avoid the everyday rush of climbers… We recommend trying our unique 2 AM night tour that will truly ensure us having the mountain all to ourselves for sunrise at the top! OR the unique camping experience and a night walk to the Pacaya´s summit.
